For the avoidance of all doubt the entire contents of this website are copyrighted © to the publisher of 400photos.uk and all Moral Rights are asserted.

That's the form of legal statement that you'll see on almost every website and publication. It's fairly standard and should never cause anyone a problem.

With all photography, copyright comes into existence automatically at the moment of creating the image and is owned by the person who takes the photo (or their employer in some cases).

Images do not have to be marked as copyright; copyright ownership does not have to be registered or claimed; neither the copyright owner's name or date of creation is required to be displayed; it is an automatic legal right which in UK law lasts for 75 years after the death of the photographer.

(On this website virtually all of the images are individually identified as copyright 400photos.uk. It's also stated clearly at the foot of every page.)

Only the copyright owner has the right to control any use of the work (i.e. the right to copy) and is free to allow or restrict the use of the work (photos, graphics, text, computer code etc) as he or she thinks fit.

Moral rights are also part of the law concerning copyright ownership and mean that it is not legally permitted to claim ownership of someone else's work or alter or adapt the work without permission.

Simply put, you can do what you want with material you create yourself but don't copy other people's work without permission. It's also very wrong to claim other people's work as your own. Most people consider that disrespectful, rude and dishonest. It might even be classed as criminal.

Surely it's not unreasonable to hope that website visitors will take the time to be courteous to the copyright owner just as they would expect to be shown respect in turn.

Note that this is not formal legal advice but it's accurate and is frankly just plain common sense.
