At the north end of Kilmartin Glen this ruin is open to the public and has excellent views in all directions.

Built as a residence for the first Protestant Bishop of the Isles, Master John Carswell it was a five storey building and is described as one of the finest Renaissance houses in Argyll.

The land to build the castle was granted in 1559 by the 5th Earl of Argyll and it was completed before 1600.

Now in the hands of Historic Environment Scotland, entry is free.

As you have seen it's a fair climb up from the car park.
