Dating back to the time of the model village created by Alexander Montgomerie, the 10th Earl of Eglinton, from 1769. The church was built in 1790 and was originally octagonal.

The site, on a raised mound, is one of several similar sites in a straight line across the landscape which includes both (probable) Pictish sites and another church at Newton Mearns.

This suggests to some that the location may have been used for worship for several thousand years.

Eaglesham is about eight miles south of Glasgow city centre and is a conservation village. There are strong links between Eaglesham and the model village of New Lanark (now a world heritage site) later designed by David Dale in 1785 or so.
