Free French Monument
Lyle Hill, Gourock
The impressive white-painted Cross of Lorraine topping an anchor on Lyle Hill above Gourock to recognise
the effort and sacrifice of the Free French forces during Word War Two.
The whole monument stands about thirty feet high. The inscription tablets are in French and English.
This view is looking east up the Clyde with Greenock behind. These were taken on a mainly dull and misty day as you can see from the horizon.

Straight on to the monument.
There's very little information about who financed or built the monument but it seems to have been erected around 1946 or '47.
Access by road is easy (signposted to Lyle Hill) and there's ample free parking.

From above and behind, this gives you some idea of the spectacular views from Lyle Hill.
Below is the town of Gourock, across the Clyde on the left is Dunoon on the Cowal peninsula, the Holy Loch, Strone Point, Loch Long and finally to the right, Kilcreggan on the Rosneath peninsula.
The low cloud over the hills on a sunny day creates a beautiful backdrop.
