This was Hampden Park Bowling Club to the west side of Cathcart Road in Glasgow south side and tucked in next to the railway line between Crosshill and Mount Florida.

It has now been declared as the site of the stadium for Scotland's international football matches (in particular one between Scotland and England in 1882 that Scotland won 5-1) and as such has now received protected status.

The original Hampden Park (here) was the home of Queen's Park Football Club and Scotlland's national team from 1873 to 1884.

However, it's NOT the site of the first match between the two countries, that was Partick Cricket Ground in Hamilton Crescent (the home of the West of Scotland Cricket Club) a few years earlier in 1872 but it IS the first Scottish football stadium (even if a really small one) and was named Hampden Park.

It's also said to be the first purpose-built football stadium on the planet so it does have considerable international importance.

Wembley, the San Siro, Maracanã, Bernabéu and all the rest* followed on but Glasgow led the way.

*Other football stadiums also have excellent reputations.

Later on the site across the road and railway was developed as a bigger stadium (you can see it at the top of the fourth photo and in a page linked to below) and was then named Hampden Park in turn before being re-named as Cathkin Park when the current Hampden Stadium was opened in 1903.

(Cathkin Park was later the location for Third Lanark Football Club, now sadly defunct.)
