The Isle of Whithorn is near the southern tip of Galloway and as you can see the original island is connected to the mainland by an isthmus*. It's not clear if it was ever a true island.

*One of those words you learn in primary school and almost never get a chance to use.

Named as the ruins of St Ninian's Chapel this is in fact a replacement building from around 1300 said to be built on the site of the first ever Christian Church in Scotland.

The Chapel is completely invisible from the harbour or (free) car park. Access to the chapel and cairn are both free as well.

Further towards the sea is The Cairn, an old lighthouse seemingly now with solar power.

The well-sheltered harbour is now used mainly for leisure as can be seen by the photos of a few souls rowing a boat round the bay.
