Skelmorlie Secret Bunker
Royal Observer Corps, Skelmorlie

These are aerial photos of an underground bunker. (??)
More correctly this is a museum set up to display the vital work done by the Royal Observer Corps during the cold war.
The actual underground bunker was accessed by the green hatch at the top left of this photo and that's virtually all that was visible when it was in use. A green box in a field.

These bunkers were built all over the country and very few are now left.
Even fewer are intact and accessible like this one.
The bunker is located on a minor country road running parallel to the A78 coast road along the hillside between Largs and Skelmorlie. It's also on the Ayrshire Coastal Path even though it's about 600 yards from the sea.

The official designation is No 23 Post, Skelmorlie and this one was built in
1965 and used until the Corps were finally stood down in 1991.

The bunker's website has details of contact and access and the bunker can
be visited by the public, by appointment.
For the convenience of visitors they've constructed a duplicate of the bunker above ground level.
