The town where in the year 397 St Ninian built the first Christian church in Scotland and that
was only after there were enough followers and was some years after the faith was first established.
It was named Candida Casa or “White House”.
(Please note that St Columba, inaccurately lauded for bringing Christianity to Scotland, wasn't even born until about 521 and didn't land in Scotland until 563, over 65 years after Ninian built the first church.)
The Kirkmadrine Stones, 20 miles or so to the west and linked to below, were carved with Christian and Viking symbols in the mid 500s, presumably by followers of Ninian.
