Douglas Polish Memorial
This is a monument to the Polish soldiers, sailors and airmen
who fought for the Allies in World War Two.

Down by the entrance to Douglas Estates is this monument to the Polish armed
forces who escaped the occupation of their country by the Soviet Union in 1939
and gathered here in Scotland to form the 1st Polish Armoured Division under
General Stanslaw Maczek.
Also involved were sections of the 10th Cavalry Brigade of the Polish Army.
The information boards on site tell the story in more detail and refer by name and rank to some of the soldiers concerned. The memorial is well cared for.
The Polish forces war effort was much appreciated and respected and many of the Polish combatants later settled in Scotland, their own country then being under Soviet rule, becoming a welcome part of Scottish life and community.
