Loch Doon Castle
South Ayrshire

At the southern end of Loch Doon, well worth a trip, the scenery is stunning.

From directly overhead the odd shape of the castle is clear.
It was originally on an island in the loch (more on that later) and was moved to the north bank when the loch was dammed to become a reservoir in the 1930s.
These two views are looking north and south respectively.

This is the island that the castle was on originally, looking north-west towards the present location.
It's called, rather boringly, Castle Island and was a lot bigger before the water level rose.

The island alone, with the remains of the castle walls clearly visible.
It seems now that it would probably have survived the raised water levels having sensibly been built on the highest point of the island.

Finally a view looking west from over the loch.
