Bothwell Castle is located in what's now a park in the south of Bothwell, just north of Hamilton and
east of Glasgow. The park has free access and parking but there's a charge to enter the castle.
Built by Walter of Moray on a loop of the River Clyde the castle dates back to 1242. Put under siege by Edward I in 1301 it fell in short order and after the Wars of Independence was passed to The Black Douglases.
Other Black Douglas castles are linked to below. This one lasted until their downfall in 1455.
The main feature added by the Douglases was the donjon - the bigger of the two massive round towers - but that was partly destroyed in 1337 during another siege.
