Culross, on the north shore of the River Forth, is a well-preserved village from the 16th century, reputed to have connections to St Serf and to be the birthplace of St Mungo (also known as St Kentigern).

Culross Palace and Town House, east of Kincardine in Fife, are now in the hands of the National Trust for Scotland.

The Palace and village are popular stops on the Fife tourist route and are often used as locations for tv shows and films.

The Palace or “Great Lodging” is the building to the left of the main square painted in yellow ochre, which was the height of fashion when it was built between 1597 and 1611 by Sir George Bruce, the Laird of Carnock.

Behind the Palace are well-maintained gardens built in terraces on the steep hillside and there's a café and gallery shop behind the Town House.

The panorama shows the entire village looking north from over the River Forth. The railway line along the shoreline was used to carry coal to the local power station in Kincardine but is no longer in regular use.

Culross Abbey is behind the village to the north and the local primary school is to the right of the panorama.

The Mercat Cross (last photo) is at the top of two narrow streets named Back and Mid Causeway.

There's loads of free parking at both ends of the village but the cobbled streets up to the Mercat Cross might cause problems for some.
