Kilmartin Glen in Argyll & Bute has more prehistoric and bronze age sites than any other part of Scotland.
Here at Dunchraigaig, just on the A816 a mile or two south of Kilmartin village and museum, is a collection of standing stones, cup and ring marked rocks, burial cists and a bronze age cairn all stretching back over five thousand years - before the building of Stonehenge.
The site also has the remains of Ballymeanoch Henge, the only henge in the west of Scotland, photographed below, though it's been sadly depleted over the years.
The henge dates back to 2,500 BC (four and half thousand years ago) and was later used for burials, until as recently as 2,000 BC. Some of the later graves were of beaker people and around the same period a range of standing stones were erected which are still there to this day.
Just up the road in the main part of Kilmartin Glen are several more cairns, two more sets of standing stones and two circles of stones not referred to as henges but very similar. Linked to below.
