Taken in October 2026 just before they start to build a solar farm on the far side of the loch from these photos. Guaranteed to spoil the view.
This small loch (seventeen acres or so) was a popular site for coarse fishing but some reports are that permits to fish are no longer available due to vandalism. These photos show a man fishing so there seems to be some doubt.
The birds on the loch are Hooper swans and there are other wild fowl in the area.
It's been in various hands over the years, like so much of Ayrshire. There are various ideas put forward for the past use of the island, some more realistic than others.
The island in the loch has seemingly at some time had a building on it but it's unclear what it was - either a friary or a residence. Some opinions are that it was in ancient times a crannog or defensive lake-house.
In the distance you can see the towns of Ayr and Prestwick and the Heads of Ayr and Greenan Castle are on the horizon by the shores of the FIrth of Clyde.
Fergus? Seemingly the name of a local chieftain back in the 800s(?) or thereabouts. Details are lost in time.
