The water running in from the bottom left (west) is the Kinness Burn which has formed the basis of the harbour, documented from the 13th century and in regular use even earlier.

The harbour is now cared for by the St Andrews Harbour Trust.

The café next to the inner harbour lock has an excellent line in fish and chips (which can be eaten at their outside tables right by the water) as well as home-made soups.
