St Monans Windmill & Pool
Fife

St Monans Windmill, Fife, aerial photograph
The windmill was used to pump seawater into the salt pans and the heat to evaporate the water to leave the salt behind was provided by the plentiful supplies of coal, locally.

The pool in the foreground is refreshed twice daily by the high tide and is one of many along this stretch of Fife coastline.

Maybe calling it a “wind-powered water pump” might be a little more accurate but of course it's not nearly as evocative or interesting a name.

The salt pans are clearly visible.

And closer again, this time from the east.
