On the outskirts of Oban on the coast road to Ganavan Sands this castle is built on a rock outcrop high above the shore.

Dunollie Castle is the ancestral home of Clan MacDougall.

The castle is open to visitors but you'll need your climbing legs to get up there.

It's a long way down to get the vegetables for lunch.

These were all taken looking north with Lismore and the hills of Morvern behind.

Behind the castle there's a café gift shop and museum and the grounds have some rather nice woodland walks.

Almost like it was built on a platform. This version of the castle is said to have been built in the 10th century after several rebuilds from the 700s onwards.

The house (museum, café) behind is not shown and dates from 1745.
